The quaint village has developed around the medieval castle (extensively remodeled over the centuries) that stands on a small hill to reach through the beautiful cypress avenue, three-mile long road that begins in the valley, on the Via Aurelia, right before the eighteenth-century Oratorio di San Guido: the place was made famous by the poems of Carducci in his poem in front of San Guido (1874). Furthermore, within the country is located the cemetery where they buried the grandmother of the poet himself. Not far from the inhabited center, located on a hill nearly 400 feet above sea level, lies the ancient fortified Castiglioncello of Bolgheri.
